What We Know:
The Manor House at the Historic Powhatan Resort in Williamsburg, Virginia, dates to approximately 1735 and was originally part of a large colonial plantation. The property is closely associated with Richard Taliaferro, a prominent Virginia architect who is believed to have designed the home, although its exact construction date remains uncertain. Built in the Georgian architectural style, the brick mansion features distinctive chimneys and carefully crafted brickwork that reflect the status and tastes of Virginia’s colonial elite. The property remained in the Taliaferro family until 1810, after which it passed through other owners and experienced significant changes over the following decades. During the Civil War, a fire destroyed the interior of the house, but the building was subsequently rebuilt by the Martin family. In 1948, the Slausson family undertook a restoration that returned much of the home’s exterior to its earlier colonial appearance. Today, the Manor House stands as a historic centerpiece of the resort and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970, preserving its connection to Virginia’s colonial past.
